Family Bios: The Haji-Mohamed Family

Fatma Haji-Mohamed and Abukar Mohamed have a daughter, 7, and a son, 3. This March, the family welcomed their third child, a daughter, into the world. They have lived in subsidized housing for over four years. It is a two-bedroom apartment which is now too small for their family. Abukar has worked as a parking attendant manager for that amount of time, and Fatma now has a part-time job as a janitorial service franchisee. They feel their dreams are about to come true as they look forward to a safe neighborhood and a stable home for their children. These Somali-American parents think that applying for a Habitat house is the best decision they have ever made as a family.

With constantly rising rent and high utility expenses, Emanuel Beng and Abuk Mou work diligently to support their five children. Emanuel is a custodian at a building in downtown Portland and Abuk works for a uniform production company. Even though both of them work full-time, it has been difficult for them to make ends meet. The family has rented a house in southeast Portland for the past four years that is in poor condition.
