Family Bios: The Lopez Family

Lazaro Rival Lopez and his wife, Maria, have two daughters living with them, Eunice, 13, and Damaris, 4, and two sons Abrahem, 18, and Ismerei, 11. Lazaro is a parks maintenance service worker and Maria is a package handler. Their current living situation has peeling paint, inadequate heat, and unsafe electrical wiring, but it is all they can afford. The moldy carpeting has aggravated their son’s asthma. They are joyful for many reasons to be a part of Habitat’s program, but the most important reason is that it will be a much healthier living situation for their children, and it will be a stable, safe place for their children to grow.

With constantly rising rent and high utility expenses, Emanuel Beng and Abuk Mou work diligently to support their five children. Emanuel is a custodian at a building in downtown Portland and Abuk works for a uniform production company. Even though both of them work full-time, it has been difficult for them to make ends meet. The family has rented a house in southeast Portland for the past four years that is in poor condition.
