Family Bios: The Oo Family

Than and Khet Khet met in a refugee camp in Thailand. Than is a co-machine operator at a packaging company. Khet Khet is a hotel housekeeper. They moved into their Habitat home at Lents in January. The apartment they were living in with their daughter Khet, 8, and son Aung, 2, had electrical and plumbing problems. The bedrooms had no lighting and had inadequate heat. “I will be happy to have my children grow up in a nice and healthy Habitat for Humanity home,” Khet Khet said. She says she looks forward to homeownership because it will allow her family to live “happily ever after.”

With constantly rising rent and high utility expenses, Emanuel Beng and Abuk Mou work diligently to support their five children. Emanuel is a custodian at a building in downtown Portland and Abuk works for a uniform production company. Even though both of them work full-time, it has been difficult for them to make ends meet. The family has rented a house in southeast Portland for the past four years that is in poor condition.
