Habitat for Humanity Portland/Metro East is a non-profit organization created to provide affordable housing for working families of modest means.
Habitat builds simple, decent homes that are one to four bedrooms that range in size between 1,100 and 1,400 square feet. Extra efforts are made to ensure high quality homes that exceed the local minimum energy efficiency standards. All homes shall meet federal government Energy Star and Earth Advantage construction standards.
Habitat uses volunteer labor to build homes. As a result, a degree of flexibility from contractors and vendors is required. Vendors and contractors must accept the Habitat mission, which is to create successful homeownership by partnering hardworking families in need with the community to build healthy, affordable homes. This is why the contractor or vendor with the lowest price may not be the contractor Habitat decides to use. Habitat will consider the bid price and customer service, as well as the contractor’s beliefs in the mission of Habitat and a contractor’s or vendor’s willingness to discount or donate materials or services. To ensure competitive pricing and to prevent delays Habitat works with several contractors and vendors for any given product.
Habitat encourages small and/or minority owned and operated companies to submit proposals.
There are two options for obtaining the plans:

Mary Bounvassana lives with her two children Jeremias, 12, and Alicia, 10. Mary is a single mom and works as a bank teller. They live in a two-bedroom apartment that is poorly insulated, with an extensive mold problem which has caused both of her children asthma. The bathroom sink, bathtub, and toilet all get clogged due to poor plumbing. Mary and her children would love to move into a new house where they could all have separate rooms and a safe area to play.
