The Al Furaijat Family

For the Al Furaijat family, Oregon was a long way from home. In 2010, Allaa, Ahlam and their two young children left their home country of Iraq in search of a more stable place to raise their family. Alaa had been working for the US Army in Iraq, but knew he wanted his children to grow up in a more safe and secure environment. Upon arriving in the US, the Al Furaijat family expanded when they welcomed their third child. Although they were settling into their new life, they still met many challenges.

Language barriers, culture shock and finding decent housing were some of the major issues they were facing. While Alaa found work at a factory, building electrical control panels for machines, buying a home seemed out of the realm of possibilities on their modest income.

Alaa had heard about Habitat for Humanity through a friend, and was excited when he found out his family was selected into the program. He is looking forward to building a sense of community in his new neighborhood, which includes two other Iraqi families who have also experienced some of the same adversities as the Al Furaijat’s.

“After years of uncertainty, my family finally has a safe place to call home,” says Alaa.
